FieldSight is the first humanitarian digital platform designed for project monitoring and infrastructure quality assurance. Developed iteratively over 2 years, the platform is now being used to monitor more than 50,000 houses, WASH sites, schools, police stations, and other infrastructure. Built to work on mobile devices and in remote and difficult-to-access locations, FieldSight creates actionable data and interfaces that help partners deliver higher-quality, lower-risk projects.

Across our buildings in Nepal, we had been using e-mail and WhatsApp to share photos and talk about issues. FieldSight allows us to systematize our processes, communicate on a more regular basis, and save the data and information we were already sharing.

I have limited time to visit all of our project sites. With FieldSight, I am able to know where we are experiencing issues and make more targeted, and ultimately more useful, site visits.

The Challenge

There are a number of challenges that prevent effective and timely quality assurance in development, humanitarian, and post-disaster contexts. FieldSight helps address these key challenges in a way that supports field staff, project staff, managers, and organizations.

Limited Technical Capacity

Contractors, NGOs, and other implementing partners have limited technical expertise in construction or project implementation techniques, especially when using new techniques such as those included with “Build Back Better” in post-disaster settings.

Limited Coordination

Humanitarian organizations, donors, and government agencies do not share information or coordinate with each other about projects and activities.

Limited Resources

Strained budgets and limited human resources prevent the development of comprehensive, on-site quality assurance.

Limited Accessibility

Humanitarian and development project sites are located in remote areas with limited infrastructure and accessibility.

Get Started Using FieldSight

A comprehensive use of FieldSight involves three components

Technological Platform

The FieldSight technological platform consists of a web application, a mobile app, and the back-end servers to support data collection and communication

The templates, assessments, surveys, forms, and educational materials that are used to conduct supervision

Supervision Program

The staff, structure, logistical support, and other program elements to support supervision throughout the life of a project

Use FieldSight

The FieldSight technology is available free and open source for any organization to use. Organizations with the capacity to develop monitoring content and educational materials can set up an account with us or install it on their servers and start using it on projects today.

Develop Content

The assessments, forms, and educational materials that will guide the supervision process are essential for making FieldSight work. For organizations interested in getting support with these tools, UNOPS and other FieldSight partners such as Miyamoto Engineering can support the development of content for the system.

Conduct Supervision

Conducting a full supervision process requires staff and logistical support in addition to the FieldSight platform and content. UNOPS and FieldSight partners have extensive experience supporting, implementing, and supervision successful development and humanitarian projects, and can provide this support using the FieldSight platform.
